The Atlantic Regional Training Centre (ARTC) is a collaborative venture among four Atlantic Canada universities – Memorial University of Newfoundland, the University of New Brunswick, Saint Mary’s University, and the University of Prince Edward Island.
The ARTC Master’s in Applied Health Services Research Program is a unique, web-based program that prepares graduates from diverse disciplines and backgrounds with the necessary skills to tackle the complex health policy issues facing us today and in the future. ACCESS-MH Project
A program of research entitled Barriers and Facilitators in Access to Child/Youth Mental Health Services or ACCESS-MH has been conducted over the past five years by a team of researchers in Atlantic Canada. The funding for this program of research was provided through the Community Based Primary Health Care Team grants program sponsored by CIHR.

The purpose of the research was to study how services are provided to children and youth with any of five mental health conditions (Anxiety, Depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Eating Disorders) and to use the results of the research to propose more effective approaches to service delivery for these five conditions. Several ARTC students assisted with the ACCESS-MH project and used the project as a launching pad for their own master’s thesis research in the area of mental health.

Graduates from the Master’s Program are expected to achieve the following learning objectives:
- Undertake health services research;
- Design, supervise, and evaluate projects;
- Critically evaluate health services research literature;
- Employ innovative approaches in health services research through understanding diversity in decision-making environments and processes;
- Communicate health research issues and results clearly and responsibly to decision makers, academics, professionals, and to the general public; and
- Integrate and synthesize health services research results across disciplines.
